Volunteers needed to help eligible Seniors and Disabled residents with taxes through Somerset County Office of Volunteer Services. Training will be offered from Jan. 7 to 11, with training for e-filing from Jan. 15 to 17. Appointments will be scheduled Feb. 1 through April 15 in the county. Manville public schools will be closed today (Thursday) and Friday. Schools will reopen Nov. 12.
Family scenic bike tours at Duke Farms in Hillsborough are being offered from 10 a.m. to noon today (Thursday) and Friday. The seven-mile ride will take riders past lakes, bridges, waterfalls, and sweeping vistas of the Duke Farms’ property. Bike seats or trailers are encouraged for younger or less secure riders. Participants are required to bring their own mountain bikes and protective headgear for the bike tours. In the event of rain, or inclement weather, rides will be re-scheduled for the following day at the same time. For reservations and more information, call 722-3700.
Free legal clinic. Need a brief consultation with an attorney? The clinic will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Atrium lobby of the Somerset County Administration Building at 20 Grove St., Somerville. Operation Shoebox New Jersey will host its third annual holiday packing event Nov. 10 at the Manville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2290, 600 Washington Ave. Volunteers are requested to arrive between 11-11:30 a.m. to register; packing will begin at noon and will conclude by 2 p.m. Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops are encouraged to participate; all youth groups must be accompanied by adult leaders. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Volunteers are also asked to help defray the cost of shipping each package sent overseas which is $8.95. Local volunteers are collecting simple shoe box gifts personally packed by children, families, and individuals here in Somerset County. From Somerset County, the shoe box gifts will be sorted and sent using whatever means necessary sea containers, trucks, buses, trains, airplanes, helicopters, boats, camels, even dog sleds to reach suffering children around the world. The local collection site is Pillar of Fire, 10 Chapel Dr., Zarephath, from 9 a.m. to noon and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Nov. 16, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 17 and 18.
