Picking party set Saturday

DOWN ON THE FARM

On Nov. 10, the Howell Farm Corn Maze will host a picking party to get residents involved in harvesting the corn used to create the maze. The public is invited to participate in the harvest, which will feature a wildlife program, corn picking and feed mixing activities, music, food, a craft program and wagon rides.
The harvest program will be held at the Maze, located at the Belle Mountain Ski Area, on Valley Road, just off Route 29.
The picking party will benefit the Mercer County Wildlife Center, which will use the corn to feed its injured and orphaned wildlife. A section of the cornfield maze has been reserved for the special harvest, which will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
A wildlife presentation will take place at 2 p.m. During the presentation, naturalists from the Mercer County Wildlife Center will introduce visitors to animals and explain how the center works.
Oxen Bud and Jake, a team of Devon-Holstein crosses, will help the harvest crew by pulling cartloads of newly picked corn from the field to the crib for storage, and visitors can meet the workhorses and other farm animals that day.
Howell Farm itself, located one mile east of the maze along Valley Road, also will be open. The farm will offer self-guided tours from 10: a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, and from noon-4 p.m. Sunday.
A children’s craft program, “Corn Husk Flowers,” will be offered on a walk-in basis (Groups of eight or more must preregister) from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday. Approximate time to complete project is 20 minutes. Materials fee is $2. For more information, call 737-3299, or visit: www.howellfarm.org.
