Replacement of an overhead sign structure on northbound Route 31 in Hopewell Township will result in closing of the shoulder of a portion of that road for about six weeks.
Two overhead signs on I-95 in nearby Lawrence also are scheduled to be replaced. All work is being done by the state Department of Transportation (DOT).
”The sign structure replacements on Routes 31 and 95 will improve aging roadway infrastructure and enhance motorist safety,” DOT Commissioner Kris Kolluri said in a news release.
The project cost is $977,000, the commissioner said.
The DOT will replace the overhead sign structures located at milepost 4.90 on Route 31 northbound in Hopewell Township, and mileposts 5.78 southbound and 6.9 northbound on I-95 in Lawrence.
Construction was scheduled to start Monday. However, because of the rain Monday, work was put off until Wednesday, a DOT official said Tuesday.
But, “the work had not started as of 9 a.m. Wednesday,” according to township police Lt. Lance Maloney. The area was blanketed in fog during the early daylight hours.
The work should be completed in late December.
