BORDENTOWN CITYThe Bordentown City Farmers Market is counting down its last days of the season, and will have its last day this Saturday, from 8 a.m. until 1p.m.
The market, which has been in operation since June, has seen a profitable season for not only those who have been running the stand, but also for the community, said organizer Mary Torres.
Members of Jersey Harvest, the group responsible for running the market and purchasing the produce, visit farms within five to 10 miles of the town on Fridays to ensure freshness.
Vendors represented at the market include: L&L Brothers, of Fieldsboro; DeWolf’s Farm, of New Egypt; Bob’s Buzzy Bees Bees, of Yardville, which provides fresh honey; Hlubik Farm, of Chesterfield; and Wassal Farm, of Chesterfield, which Mr. Karousatos calls the most organic of the vendors. Apps Hardware also offers potted plants and herbs.
The market, which is located on the 300 block of Farnsworth Avenue, offers a variety of produce at a price that is affordable, added Ms. Torres.
The market prices tend to be a bit higher than supermarket produce, depending on the original vendor, Ms. Torres said. She compared the markup to a retailer-wholesaler relationship, but said the money from purchases goes toward market expenses, such as gas and signage.
”Typically we get about 40 to 50 customers on any given Saturday,” she noted.
She added that although participation has been good, the farmers market would love to see increased participation from more members of the community in the coming season, which will recommence in mid-June 2008.
The farm stand also sold produce to restaurants within the city, with some of its main sponsors being Pescaro’s, the HOB, Jester’s Café, and Olivers.
In addition to the ever-popular New Jersey fresh tomatoes, Ms. Torres said that the market regularly sold beets, brussels sprouts, turnips, eggplant, hot and bell peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, green cabbage, Swiss chard, collard greens, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, white and red sweet potatoes, Jersey gold potatoes, red and golden delicious apples, and Granny Smith apples.
The market also features decorative dried flowers and free-range eggs, as well as Bob’s Buzzy Bees honey.
”We also just want to thank everyone who has been involved in the market this year,” said Ms. Torres, “And we would like to continue to have another successful season next year.”
