   South Brunswick High School senior Henry Ma, of Kendall Park, is a finalist in the 2007 Chinese Institute of Engineers — USA Greater Chapter High School Scholarship.
   The scholarship program recognizes outstanding high school students and encourages them to advance their education in engineering, science and other professional fields.

   Two South Brunswick High School students were recognized in the 2007 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Achievement Award in Writing Contest.
   Sweta Halder was named a winner in the competition while Syed Abbas Haider placed in the competition.
   The NCTE Achievement Award in Writing Contest recognizes high school juniors who excel in writing. Winners demonstrate their writing ability in two forms: first, in a sample of their best writing, in any form or genre, drafted and revised over time, and then in an impromptu essay on a subject set by the Achievement Awards Advisory Committee and responded to by all candidates for the award in that year.

   South Brunswick High School English Supervisor April Gonzalez will speak at the 2007 National Council of Teachers of English annual convention, held Nov. 15 to Nov, 20 in New York.
   Ms. Gonzalez will participate in a panel discussion, “Blogging Connections: Using Blogs to Foster Intertextual Connections,” where panel members will first present a brief overview of the theoretical foundations of Intertextuality and its relationship to reading comprehension, according to a press release issued by the NCTE.
   This will be followed by classroom models of how blogging can be used in tandem with strategies that guide students in recognizing and expanding the connections they make among texts during the reading process.

   The South Brunswick High School Vietnam Era class is currently collecting items for care packages to send to our troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
   The following donations would be appreciated: coffee, tea, hot chocolate, drink mixes, sugar packets, creamer, tuna (pouches), fruit snacks, cracker snacks, sweets, beef jerky and any snack items.
   Skin moisturizers, sun blocks, sunscreens, sun-tan lotions, bath & body products, lip balm, feminine hygiene products, soap, shower gel, baby wipes (preferably unscented), deodorant, bath/body wash, field towels (singles), hand sanitizer, nail clippers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, shave gel, wash cloths, combs and hair pics, batteries will also be accepted.
   Other accepted items include DVD movies, magazines (particularly sports magazines), holiday music and decorations, notebooks, stationary items and pens. T-shirts must be brown for Army and Navy, green for Marines, black or brown for Air Force. The class will also accept black boot socks, white athletic socks and dark-colored beanie caps, as well as Beanie Babies, which are distributed to local children.
   Donations can be dropped off at the high school by Thursday, Nov. 15. Monetary donations of $10 will help defray the cost of shipping.    The student council of South Brunswick High School will be holding its seventh annual Powder Puff Football Tournament on Friday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. in the high school’s Viking Stadium. Girls will be playing, boys will be coaching them and both boys and girls will be cheerleaders.
   The event will feature three 30-minute games: freshman vs. juniors, sophomores vs. seniors, and the winners of both games will face off for the championship.
   The event is open to the public. Tickets are $5 at the gates. All proceeds will benefit a charity.
   In the case of rescheduling, the game will be held Saturday, Nov. 17.

   South Brunswick High School’s Project Graduation program will hold its first major fundraiser of the school year with a craft show on Saturday, Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the high school, Ridge Road.
   The craft show will feature more then 70 crafters and vendors from the New Jersey/Pennsylvania area. Door prizes, a bake sale, a Tricky Tray auction, and breakfast and lunch all will be offered. Admission is $2 per person.

   The Greenbrook School Site Council has launched a campaign to collect used musical instruments and stands for children in need who participate in the District’s music program.
   The project, called the Instrument Bank, is being spearheaded by Greenbrook Site Council member Judy Walters. The collection will benefit students throughout the district who are in need of a particular musical instrument.
   Instruments and music stands that are in good condition or may need minor repairs are being collected. Donations will be picked up at your home. E-mail Ms. Walters at [email protected], with “Instrument Bank” in the subject line, to schedule a date and time for the instrument(s) to be picked up.
