Robert J. Rabe

Mr. Rabe, 85, of Freehold Township, died Nov. 16, 2007, at home after a long battle with cancer. Born in Linden-Dahlhausen, Germany, he moved to America when he was 6 years old and grew up in Lakewood. Mr. Rabe became a United States citizen on April 6, 1933. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, Scout Bombing Squadron VMSB-343 (Gregory’s Gorillas), during World War II and later worked for the Fort Monmouth U.S. Army Communications Command. He loved to sail and owned several sailboats throughout his life. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Peg McMahon Rabe; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steven and Liann Rabe of Boston, and Michael and Bernadine Rabe of Toms River; a daughter, Laura Rabe of Mount Holly; and three grandchildren. Interment took place at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown section of North Hanover, with a private military ceremony. A memorial service was later held at Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold.
