BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP — Kenneth Bertrand “Ken” Dennis, 83, died Saturday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton.
Born in Bordentown in 1924, Mr. Dennis retired in 1986 after 37 years as a Workers Compensations Claims supervisor with New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Company of Ewing. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Converse DD509. He served as staff yeoman with the Amphibious Forces participating in the D-Day landings at Sicily, Salerno, Italy and the June 6, 1944 “Omaha Beach” landing in Normandy, France. He also served as a staff yeoman with the “Project Baker” group at the Banana River Naval Air Station in Florida where naval pilots were instructed on Ground Control Approach Landings. Mr. Dennis was a member of the USS Converse DD509 Association, U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation, National World War II Memorial, American Legion Post 26, AARP and was a parishioner of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church of Bordentown.
Mr. Dennis was elected to four terms on the Bordentown Regional High School Board of Education and served on the Bordentown Township Planning Board. He was a manager in the Bordentown Little League for 12 years. He served as vice president and president of the Little Devils Drum and Bugle Corps Parents Club. While living on Long Beach Island, he was a volunteer for the “Meals On Wheels” program and also volunteered at the Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin.
The son of the late Eugene and Yvonne Dennis, husband of the late Rose Heffernan Dennis and father of the late Christopher and Kevin Dennis, he is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Patricia A. Dennis of Marlton and Beth A. and Daniel Duimstra of Toms River; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth B. Jr. and Joanne Dennis of Cape Coral, Fla. and Timothy J. and Gabriele Dennis of Clinton Township, Mich.; nine grandchildren Amy, Jill, Julie, Sarah, Melissa, Danielle, Laura, Shawn and Jason; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his companion, Doris Zahorsky of Bordentown Township.
There will be a private viewing and interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery with memorial services to be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Peppler Funeral Home of Bordentown.
