How good was the Bordentown High girls’ varsity bowling team against Moorestown at Papp’s Lanes this past Monday night?
For starters, the Scotties came within six pins of beating the Quakers by 1,000 pins (2,736 to 1,742). They won the first game 942 to 679. Then they trounced the Quakers 873 to 573 in game number two. And in the last game, Bordentown had a pin count of 921 to Moorestown’s 490.
Many professional bowlers would take a 694 series in a heartbeat. And while Bordentown senior star Kim Limani was pleased to have bowled so well, she was actually shooting for a 700 plus series.
”She needed two strikes in the tenth frame of her last game to get a 700. She got the first one, but not the second one,” said Bordentown head varsity bowling coach Ron Jones of Limani’s big night. Limani posted games of 216 and 213 before erupting with a 265 final game.
Sophomore Brittany Havens rolled a 548 series, which featured a 220 game and a 180 game. Chelsea Kohfeldt, a 10th grader, came through with a 541 series (220, 157 and 164) in her first match. Junior Cathy Jones rolled a 484 series with a 196 high game. Colleen McGonigal recorded a 469 series and her top game was a 172. It was just a great 4-0 win for the Scotties.
Thunderbird Lanes has never been the Scotties favorite place to bowl. Yet they were able to gut out a 3-1 win over Pemberton there on Tuesday evening.
The Scotties got a little scare when Brittany Havens dislocated a finger on her non-bowling hand in an accident which happened while she was attempting to pick up her ball.
”Luckily we had a nurse there and she got it (the finger) back in place,” said Jones. Despite the injury, Havens actually bowled well and posted a 513 series with a 187 high game.
Limani, who really doesn’t like bowling at Thunderbird Lanes, recorded a team-best 549 series with a 188 high game. Jones rolled a 513 series and her best game was a 177. Out of the fourth slot, McGonigal posted a 445 series, which featured a best game of 168.
Kohfeldt (a 148 high game) and Alaura Jones split the other three games for the Scotties. After losing its first game by just 12 pins, Bordentown came back to crush Pemberton 811 to 698 in the second game. Then the Scotties took the final game 802-717 and captured the overall pin count 2,415-2,229.
Usually the Scotties hate losing even one game, but they were playing a solid Pemberton team at a place where they just haven’t bowled “light’s out.” So, they’ll take it.
”It’s not the girls’ favorite lanes and Pemberton looks like they have a very good team,” noted Jones, who’d like to see his girls bowl a little better at Thunderbird the next time around.
Even so, the Scotties are right where they should be at 2-0. They are scheduled to host Ewing today (Thursday). On Saturday Bordentown is scheduled to compete in the Westfield Tournament at Jersey Lanes. It is scheduled to host Maple Shade on Monday. Next Tuesday, Bordentown will be back at Thunderbird Lanes to take on a solid Northern Burlington team.
NBC BOYS
Only one bowler rolled a 500 series or better for the Northern Burlington County Regional High boys’ varsity bowling squad in its match versus Delran on Tuesday night.
However, NBC standout Frank Capra didn’t just bowl a 500 series, he came through with a huge 602 series (198, 201 and 203) to lead the Greyhounds to a 4-0 win over the Bears.
”I thought it was great,” said NBC head varsity bowling coach Ed Del Russo of Capra’s stellar performance.
Justin Howarth (a 477 series with a 183 high game), Zach Gandy (a 468 series with a 158 high game), John Webster (a 461 series with a 170 high game) and Nick Doremus (a 444 series with a 185 high game) all scored for the victors as well. Northern Burlington had a total pinfall of 2,452 to Delran’s 2,214 mark. The Greyhounds’ best game was its first one when it beat the Bears 869 to 771. On Monday NBC tied Holy Cross 2-2.
”Believe it or not I was upset by it because we lost two close games. We lost by eight pins and by seven pins. We took total pins 2,544 to 2,442,” said Del Russo, whose Greyhounds captured the first game 902 to 795. “We should have won all four.”
Webster had the high series for NBC with a 539. His best game was a 205. With a 235 first game, Howarth rolled the Greyhounds’ highest game. He posted a 532 series overall. Gandy (a 497 series with a 179 high game), Doremus (a 488 series with a 174 high game) and Capra (a 479 series with a best game of 189) were solid, yet not spectacular.
NBC (1-0-1) is scheduled to play Maple Shade today (Thursday) and Rancocas Valley on Monday. It is scheduled to play Bordentown at Thunderbird Lanes on Tuesday.
BRHS BOYS
The Bordentown High boys’ varsity bowling team struggled in its first two matches but most of Scotties’ problems are correctable ones.
This past Tuesday, Pemberton beat Bordentown 4-0 at Thunderbird Lanes. Dave Cruz was the Scotties’ top bowler with a 502 series, which included a 208 high game. Ryan McDonald (a 484 series with a high game of 173), Mark Brown (a 456 series with a 163 high game), and Jeremy Schaeffer (a 452 series with a 154 high game) also rolled decent scores. Pemberton had a total pincount of 2,697 to Bordentown’s 2,233.
This past Monday evening at Papp’s Lanes, Moorestown defeated Bordentown, 4-0, winning the total pin count 2,584 to 2,263. Brown bowled well and posted both the high game (205) and high series (520) for Bordentown. Meanwhile, C. Schaeffer (a 170 high game), McDonald (a 170 high game) and J. Schaeffer (a 165 high game) each rolled a solid game but no one was consistent except for Brown.
”On the guys’ side they’re stuck at around 2,200 (plus) pins,” said Bordentown head boys’ varsity bowling coach, Ron Jones. “They need to start converting spares. They’re not consistent enough at converting them.”
The Scotties, however, should return to form once they get a chance to practice making those spares.
Bordentown and NBC will compete in the Holiday Tournament at the Maple Bowl next Wednesday. In addition to next Tuesday’s match versus NBC, Bordentown is scheduled to host Ewing today (Thursday). It is scheduled to play in the Westfield Tournament on Saturday. Bordentown is scheduled to host Maple Shade on Monday.
NBC GIRLS
Northern Burlington County Regional High girls’ varsity bowling star Lindsey Webster opened her 2007-2008 season with a pair of back-to-back strong performances.
On Monday, Webster, a senior captain, fired games of 160, 193 and 191 (a 544 series) to pace the NBC Greyhounds to an easy 4-0 win over the Holy Cross Lancers.
”I was very, very happy with the girls’ performance,” said second-year Northern Burlington head varsity bowling coach Ed Del Russo.
With a 425 series, which was highlighted by a 147 high game, Ahnnalisa Regi, a sophomore captain, was the Greyhounds’ second best bowler on Monday. Senior Mindy Hammond came though with a strong 423 series (118, 153 and 152). NBC other bowlers were senior April Savoy (a 364 series with a 128 high game) and junior Priscilla Medenbach (a 359 series with a best game of 128).
Northern Burlington won the total pin count 2,115-1,896. It won the first game 668 to 646. NBC outscored Holy Cross 716 to 613 in the second game and 731 to 637 in the final game.
On Tuesday night, it was not looking good for the Lady Greyhounds in the early going as they dropped their first two games versus the Delran Bears. But Webster came to the rescue and rolled a 201 final game to spark NBC to a 795-725 win in the last game. That big last game enabled Northern Burlington to take the total pin count 2,285 to 2,234 and tie Delran 2-2. Webster ended up with a stellar 556 series (170, 185 and 201).
Hammond was also at the top of her game with a 465 series and a high game of 170. Savoy also came up big and rolled a 428 series with a 154 high game. Also giving very solid performances for Northern Burlington were Medenhall (a 424 series with a 156 high game) and Regi (a 412 series with a 157 high game).
”They bowled hard to get a tie,” said Del Russo. “I was very happy because it’s easy to fall down two games and just roll over and die. And the girls didn’t do that.”
Northern Burlington (1-0-1) is scheduled to play against Maple Shade today (Thursday). It is scheduled to compete against Rancocas Valley next Monday and Bordentown next Tuesday.
