Mrs. Butterworth, 102, of North Brunswick, died Nov. 22, 2007, at Francis E. Parker Memorial Home, Piscataway. Born in New Brunswick, she resided in North Brunswick from 1936 to 2004, when she relocated to Parker Memorial Home. She was a retired secretary, matron and head matron at the Middlesex County Workhouse, where she was employed for 40 years. She assisted in the establishment of an STD treatment program at the facility during World War II, and the racial integration of both staff and inmates in the 1950s. Prior to that, she was employed at Interwoven Mills Co., and the College of Agriculture at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, North Brunswick, where she was a former Eucharistic minister. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court Loretto Chapter No. 287, New Brunswick; a Lady of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem; and recipient of the Pilgrim’s Shell from the Patriarch of Jerusalem. She was the first president of the PTA at Our Lady of Lourdes School, Milltown. Mrs. Butterworth was predeceased by her husband, Clark Anderson Butterworth, in 1972; a son, Michael Anderson Butterworth; her younger siblings, Russell Fay, Catherine Fay, Brother John J. Fay and Eleanor Stillwell; and a daughter-inlaw, Patricia Fisk Butterworth. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Guy and Katherine; a niece; and several relatives in Ireland. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Peace Church. Burial was at St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Brunswick. Arrangements were by Selover Funeral Home, North Brunswick.
