Mr. Gilman, 76, of Rumson, died Nov. 17, 2007, at St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. He was managing director and senior vice president at Chubb & Son Insurance Underwriters, retiring after 35 years. He was also a member of the board of directors at Summit Bancorporation from 1972-96. He served with the U.S. Army for two years. He was a parishioner of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Rumson. He was a member of the Harvard Club, New York City. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Cecilia Birdsall Gilman; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth Gilman Hobbs and William Thomas Hobbs II of Charlotte, N.C., and Caroline Gilman LaVoie and John David LaVoie of Orinda, Calif.; a son and daughter-in-law, Samuel V. and Katherine Kingsbury Gilman IV of Hoboken; two sisters, Martha Gilman Renzi of Zionsville, Ind., and Helene Gilman Herrman of Point Pleasant; and seven grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Holy Cross Church. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank.
