Watershed ambassadors ready to serve community

Are you looking for an exciting environmental presentation for your classroom or community group? Do you want to discover more about your local waterway and its watershed? Are you interested in learning about volunteer monitoring techniques? If so, the state Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) New Jersey Watershed Ambassadors Program can help you.

Watershed ambassadors are available to make free, interactive presentations on water issues to community organizations and schools. The ambassadors monitor New Jersey rivers using visual and biological assessment protocols. They also train community volunteers in these two monitoring techniques.

The New Jersey Watershed Ambassadors Program is a community-based AmeriCorps program that the DEP began in 2000 with the goal to improve understanding and stewardship of New Jersey’s waterways. AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs, which engage more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, homeland security and the environment.
