The Village Express convenience store at 48 W. Broad St., Hopewell Borough, was held up at gunpoint early Monday morning.
The incident followed by less than 24 hours an armed robbery of a pharmacy at Stop&Shop in Hopewell Township. Investigations of both cases still were under way Wednesday.
Chief George Meyer of the Hopewell Township Police Department, which covers Hopewell Borough, said the robbery of the Village Express occurred at about 5:30 a.m. Monday, when a man approached the counter and asked for a pack of cigarettes.
That man was described as a black, in his mid-20s, of thin build and about 5 feet and 8 inches tall.
At the same time, a second man entered the store and proceeded behind the counter where the clerk was located. This man was described as white, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing dark clothing with a bandana over his face.
The man with the bandana brandished a gun and asked the clerk where the money was.
As the man who had asked for the cigarettes began to go behind the counter, the clerk fled the store.
The suspects took an undetermined amount of money from behind the counter and are believed to have fled the store going north on Mercer Street.
Patrolman James Rosso and Detective Kevin Zorn are handling this case.
THE STOP&SHOP PHARMACY, on Denow Road, Hopewell Township, was held up for drugs Sunday afternoon in a case police have classified as armed robbery.
Chief Meyer said Monday that the stickup occurred at 12:15 p.m. Sunday.
A man told a woman pharmacist that he had a gun and displayed a black object tucked in his waistband.
The man then demanded a quantity of a narcotic painkiller. When the pharmacist told the man she did not have access to that narcotic, he demanded another. The pharmacist then gave him a bottle of hydrocodone pills, and the man left the store
The suspect is described as a white man, medium height and build, wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. His face was partially covered with a scarf. He was last seen leaving the store on foot. Patrolman Michael Toth and Detective Zorn are involved in this investigation.
