The Lawrence High School girls basketball team started the season with a win over Princeton.
The Cardinals defeated Princeton, 55-29, in the Colonial Valley Conference opener on Friday.
”It was a great way to start the season,” said Lawrence girls basketball coach Gregg Zenerovitz. “We did some things extremely well and we did some things that we need to work on.”
Lawrence then lost to face Nottingham, 70-44, on Tuesday.
”It’s going to be a great challenge,” said Zenerovitz. “Nottingham’s a well-coached team. It’s a great test for us so early in the season. We’re looking to improve on what we needed to improve on.”
Against Princeton, Lawrence junior Ashley Russo led all scorers with 19 points, including two three-point baskets.
”Russo had a very good all-around game,” said Zenerovitz. “She’s very aggressive, she looks for shots and dribbles to the net.”
Lawrence junior Lauren Raymond contributed 10 points and junior Zainabu Sillah scored eight points. Cardinal senior Leronda Aviles and junior Jen Korngut each put in seven points, while senior Brittany Shropshire scored four points.
”Jen Korngut did a great job coming off the bench,” said Zenerovitz. “She gave us valuable minutes, especially when Ashley got into foul trouble.”
Zenerovitz also praised Shropshire for her defensive play and credited Raymond for her offensive efforts.
”Brittany scored four points on offense, but played very tough on the defensive end,” said Zenerovitz. “Lauren was aggressive and played well offensively.”
Nottingham went ahead, 24-9, in the first quarter on Tuesday, but Lawrence rallied to hold tight to the Northstars for the rest of the game. Nottingham only out scored Lawrence by just four points in the second quarter, 10-6, three in the third quarter, 20-17, and four in the fourth quarter, 16-12.
Sillah led Lawrence’s shooters with 12 points, Aviles scored nine, Regan and Korngut each scored six points, Shropshire scored five points, Russo tallied four and Raymond had two points.
Lawrence is scheduled to play Notre Dame tomorrow (Friday) and takes on Northern Burlington in the first game of Hopewell’s John Molinelli Tournament on Thursday.
”Obviously, we walked out with a “W’ against Princeton and the girls were happy,” said Zenerovitz. “The girls have been working hard since day one.”
