PRINCETON — Young scientists will compete in the Princeton University Regional Science Olympiad in Jadwin & McDonnell Halls and Fine Halls on Tuesday, Jan. 8. The tournament, sponsored by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey, will feature the work of middle and high school students from Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Hunderton, Somerset, Sussex and Union Counties.
Designed to promote science education, the competition is all encompassing, crossing a variety of science disciplines including biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. Opposing teams from area schools will use their science smarts to face-off in a series of interactive events and experiments in hopes of advancing to the next level of competition.
Some of the hands-on challenges and perplexing problems will include:
• Robot Ramble – Students will enter their own constructed robots into a contest where the robots must be capable of moving items and performing certain tasks.
• Scrambler– Students will enter their own constructed mechanical devices, which use only the energy from a falling mass to transport an egg along a straight track, stopping as close to a terminal barrier as possible without breaking the egg.
• Physics Lab – Students will compete in lab activities in the areas of work, energy and power.
