Corby’s boys take 3-1 record into tournament

A late rally by Gateway cost the New Egypt High boys’ basketball team a chance to finish 2007 with a perfect record. Even so, a 3-1 mark with injuries to key players starting to heal is pretty good.
Kevin Janowski recorded 20 points and 14 rebounds in a 49-13 win over Maple Shade. Desmond Hubert added 11 points and four blocks as New Egypt has created a dominant force down low.
”He (Janowski) is playing really, really well for us,” noted New Egypt Coach Jay Corby. “Kevin is our go-to guy and he’s responding.”
Janowski had 20 points and 15 rebounds for New Egypt in a 41-39 loss to Gateway on Saturday. Hubert added nine points, seven rebounds and 10 blocks.
”He (Hubert) almost had a triple-double,” Corby noted. “He’s done a good job for us.”
Unfortunately, New Egypt struggled from the foul line in this game. This gave Gateway a chance to pull out the game with a last-second shot.
”Their first lead in the second half was right at the final buzzer,” Corby said.
The one great positive in this game was the brief return of Davion Clanton.
”We played Davion about five minutes,” Corby said. “Davion is our point guard. With him out, we’ve had to move people around. We’ve had guys out of position. Now we should be able to get Davion back to full practices starting after Christmas.”
New Egypt is scheduled to open its holiday tournament with a game against St. Mary’s on Thursday night at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will face the winner of Keyport-Lindenwald 7 p.m. Saturday night in the tournament’s title game. Last year Lindenwald edged New Egypt by a point in the title game.

The Allentown High boys’ basketball team had a couple of early leads, but it ended up losing all three games it played this past week.
Mike Sanfillipo scored 15 points in a 63-47 loss to Princeton Day School.
Kyle Nieliwocki scored 13 points, and Jim Search and Dan Westfall added 10 points each in a 73-54 loss to Ewing on Friday.
Because one team dropped out, Allentown’s holiday tournament has been changed to two individual games, both at home. Allentown will host Pinelands at 1 p.m. today (Thursday). It will host Nottingham at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
