EAST BRUNSWICK – Township resident Kevin Mooney was recently honored by the Probation Association of New Jersey (PANJ), receiving the organization’s “Lifetime Achievement Award.”
Mooney joined PANJ in 1973 and served as an “exemplary” probation officer until his retirement in 2003. After his retirement, Mooney has continued to serve as labor consultant for PANJ.
“Kevin gave PANJ 34 years of his life, and continues to serve our organization by willingly giving his time and talent,” PANJ President George Christie said. “Kevin’s service is a gift that keeps giving. We’re honored that he continues to serve with us.”
Mooney served as president of the Middlesex County Probation Officer’s Association for four years, and as president of PANJ for four years.
PANJ presented Mooney with the award during its 65th annual training institute, “Everyone’s a Star … What’s Your Role,” held in Atlantic City. The annual training institute is a grassroots event sponsored by the PANJ Education Foundation to ensure that officers are given adequate training. Workshop topics include: immigration and deportation, predatory drugs, psychiatric illness and substance abuse, Internet crime, communicable health issues and profiling stalkers.
The association named state Assemblyman Gordon Johnson (D-Bergen) Legislator of the Year, and New Jersey 101.5’s “Big” Joe Henry as Citizen of the Year. First Assistant Attorney General John Vazquez gave the keynote address on the state’s crime prevention efforts.
There are an estimated 2,800 probation officers and supervisors in New Jersey who oversee approximately 200,000 adult and juvenile probationers.
