CRANBURY — Cranbury police discovered a missing elderly man from Maryland driving down Route 130 after a routine traffic stop on Jan 20.
Patrol Officer Todd Galla spotted 82-year-old Calvin Stevens heading south on Route 130 and pulled the vehicle over at about 1 a.m. for two reasons, Police Chief John Hansen said.
Initially, Mr. Galla noticed the vehicle was traveling under the speed limit and weaving in and out of its lane, Chief Hansen said.
However, he said Mr. Galla also recognized Mr. Stevens’ vehicle from a previous alert that had been issued after there was a sighting reported in Hamilton Township at around 11 p.m.
Upon questioning, Mr. Stevens seemed disoriented, according to Mr. Galla’s report, stating at one point that he believed it was the middle of the afternoon, even though it was 1 a.m.
Mr. Stevens was transported to the University Medical Center at Princeton and police contacted his next of kin.
According to the police report, Mr. Stevens went for a drive in his hometown of Easton, Md., two days earlier and was reported missing on Jan. 18.
He had suffered from dementia and family members were concerned for his safety, Chief Hansen said.
Chief Hansen said Mr. Stevens whereabouts for the 48 hours he was missing are still unclear.
