Roosevelt School event challenges parents

Parents of Roosevelt School fourth-graders can try their hands on the state’s standardized test their children will soon be taking during a Feb. 28 workshop at the school.
The school hosts the workshop in conjunction with a catered dinner each year, to allow parents to experience the standardized tests their children take in March. The workshop begins at 5:30 p.m.
Roosevelt School Principal Michael Magliacano initiated the workshop-dinner after becoming principal at Roosevelt School three years ago. Parents are required to attend the event, though he admits prior commitments prevent some parents from attending.
Mr. Magliacano said approximately 50 percent of fourth-grade parents typically attend the event.
”The workshop is designed to provide an overview of the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJASK4), which will be administered to all fourth-grade students the week of March 10 – 14, 2008,” said Mr. Magliacano. “Our goal is to help familiarize the parents with the Language Arts Literacy, Science, and Mathematics assessment portions of the state test.”
After taking the tests, the parents will be graded on their performance on the exams, which Mr. Magliacano said helps the parents understand the rigor of the exams.
”I hope for the parents to gain insight to how difficult, along with the amount of content and application required by 9- and 10-year-olds,” said Mr. Magliacano. “In turn, for the parents to provide support to their children with their school work no matter what grade they are in.”
