FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – The new Wellness Center at CentraState Medical Center will be the new starting location for this year’s annual Freehold Walk MS. Participants, those already registered and those interested in registering, are being asked to meet on April 13 at 9 a.m. at the Wellness Center, where the walk itself will begin at 10 a.m. promptly.
According to a press release, every hour, someone is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic disease of the central nervous system for which there is no cure. Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body and stops people from moving. More than 13,000 people are diagnosed with MS in New Jersey alone, with more than 400,000 people nationwide.
The new Wellness Center at CentraState which houses the MS Center was opened in January. The MS Center provides MS patients with coordinated care for evaluation, education and treatment from a team of specialists, all focused on the overall mobility and wellness of each patient without the need for a full hospital visit.
The Wellness Center recently launched its first 12-week wellness program that is offered exclusively to those living with MS. There will be tours available on the day of Walk MS for those who would like to see the new facility and the benefits it provides to those with MS.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Walk MS promises a day of fun-filled activities for families throughout Monmouth County. Walk MS began in New Jersey in 1988 as a way to raise funds for much needed research and programs for those in New Jersey who are living with MS, according to the press release.
Only 20 years later, programs such as the MS Center at CentraState add to a long list of treatments and services now available to those suffering with MS. Funds raised from events sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Mid Jersey Chapter – such as the Walk MS on April 13 and the Bike MS “Coast the Coast” Ride on May 17-18 – are reinvested directly into MS research and into New Jersey-based MS programs and services for everyone whose lives are touched by MS, according to the press release.
Last year these two events earned a combined total of $2 million for MS research and programs based in New Jersey.
