In spirit of National Library Week, Princeton Public Library will hold a Food for Fines Day on Monday, April 14, when library customers can have their fines forgiven by helping to stock the pantries of local food banks.
For each nonperishable food item and overdue library material brought to the Community Room between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., the library will waive $1 in fines up to a maximum of $10 for 10 items.
All of the food will be donated to the Mercer Street Friends Food Bank, which cites a special need for cans of tuna and plastic containers of peanut butter, jelly and jam, along with canned fruits and vegetables. Glass containers will not be accepted.
Established in 1987, the Mercer Street Friends Food Bank is a regional organization whose mission is to alleviate hunger through food distribution, nutrition education and assistance, advocacy and outreach. The Food Bank receives and distributes more than 1.5 million pounds of food per year, which helps to feed about 17,000 low-income area residents.
