PRINCETON — Three men who police say appear to have gang ties were arrested following a fight at Princeton University’s Wilcox Hall early Saturday morning.
A 19-year-old female university student rejected sexual advances from one of the three dance-party crashers, and that led to the assaults, police said.
The violence that followed resulted in the three males who are not university students, Vonzell Irving Kelley, Bernadino Guervil and John Martin Hayes, being arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
The 20-year-old Mr. Kelley, of 4 Maple Terrace, Princeton was alleged in press reports to be a member of the Bloods street gang, but local police said they could not confirm this.
”The three accused individuals are known to law enforcement to be affiliated with street gangs in some way,” said police Lt. David Dudeck.
Borough police described what occurred at the dance party as a melee. The female who initially rejected sexual advances was struck in the face and shoved to the ground by one of the accused and a 20-year-old male and 18-year-old female, who intervened were attacked by the three accused, police said. The torso, back and face of the 20-year-old male were kicked and stomped on and the 18-year-old female was struck in the face.
Mr. Kelley, Mr. Guervil, 20, of Sturwood Way in Lawrence and Mr. Hayes, 21, of 24 Clay St. in Princeton fled the party, but were caught a short time later by police, according to the report.
They were transported to Borough Police headquarters for processing and released on $25,000 bail each.
Mr. Kelley required medical treatment as he had several teeth knocked out during the incident.
