Icouldn’t agree more with a recent article in another paper titled “Encourage County to Preserve Speedway.” My first trip to Wall Township speedway (Wall Stadium) was in 1955 at just 11 years old, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Not only have I been a spectator for over a half-century, but I was also able to fulfill a lifelong dream the past several years of driving three different modified racecars at the Saturday morning program (what a thrill!). I have terminal cancer and was hoping to drive one just once more before I get my wings, but that hope is now gone. Like the two deceased drivers in the article who had their ashes spread at the track, I have instructed my family to spread part of mine there too. I had hoped it would be done to the roar of racecars. Now, maybe never.
I had a chance several years ago to stand up at a packed meeting to defend raceway park drag strip, which is always under attack by people moving in closer and closer to the track. I began attending there when it was only nine months old. I’m happy it’s still going, but for how long?
And now they may end the cruise nights in Freehold of which I’m a participant with my ’56 Chevy. Pretty soon, there’ll be nothing left for the car enthusiasts in New Jersey.
Yes, the county should consider buying and preserving this 58- year-old landmark, or maybe the owners of Raceway Park and other investors can find a solution adding a year-round attraction to offset expenses. There’s got to be a way. Someone, please help this long-time family entertainment spot to survive. I know change is inevitable, but the time for Wall Speedway has not come yet! Let’s stick together.
