Holmdel police respond to one-car accident

HOLMDEL – A Morganville man was transported by helicopter to an area hospital after his vehicle collided with a utility pole Saturday, June 7.

Richard Stavola Jr., 20,was operating his black 2004 Ford Mustang southbound on Crawford’s Corner Road, approaching RoundHillRoad, when he failed to negotiate the curve in the roadway, said responding Holmdel Police Officer Joseph VanPelt.

“Stavola’s vehicle left the travel lane and left the roadway on the right side. The vehicle struck a curb, a fire hydrantmarker and the fire hydrant, which put the vehicle into a clockwise spin,” VanPelt explained. “It then impacted a utility pole on the driver’s-side door when it came to a rest.”

VanPelt said the police department is investigating whether speed was a factor. He added that driver impairmentwas not a contributing factor. Officers responded at approximately 11 a.m.

“Witnesses said that he climbed out of the vehicle,” VanPelt said. “He was the only occupant.”

Holmdel FirstAid andHeavyRescue, the Holmdel Fire Department and the Hazlet Heavy Rescue attended to Stavola before he was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune from the St. Catherine’s Church parking lot.

Stavola was transported by the state police because of possible head trauma and facial injuries, VanPelt said.
