SOUTH BRUNSWICK – The Township Council has introduced an ordinance that would ban high school students from parking on Welcome Farms Road.
The ban would be effective from 7 a.m. until 8 a.m. in order to discourage the students from parking there, since class starts at 7:30 a.m.
“Every spot is taken,” said Councilman Joseph Camarota. “People couldn’t get out. Deliveries couldn’t be made.”
This is not a new problem.
“We’ve been banning street parking there for the last couple years,” Camarota said. “We just kept moving to different streets.”
According to finance officer Joseph Monzo, ordinances have also been made to stop students from parking on Walden PondWay, Norton Road and FirstAvenue.
Camarota said that the council worked with the high school to try to stop students from parking on Welcome Farms Road, with little success.
“They just kept parking there,” he said.
Principal Tim Matheney said that since he has been at the school, since the summer of 2004, there have been concerns from residents on Welcome Farms Road about the parking situation.
However, there is not much the high school can do.
“The issue of students breaking parking rules is an issue that is taking place outside of school,” Matheney said. “They have been accountable to the police department for breaking the rule.”
The ordinance would not take effect until September, since by the time the ordinance is passed, school would not be in session.
