Hopefully, Assemblyman Cohen is self satisfied to see the results of his efforts to free Congo, the vicious dog. Mr. Cohen unleashed Congo to do what he does best — maul, maim and create mayhem. This time it was not against a poor landscaper, but rather the family’s 75-year old-grandmother. Instead of “protecting his family,” Congo attacked his family.
Mr. Cohen must now consider enacting legislation to protect human life over supposed dog “rights.” Harboring vicious, dangerous dogs simply can’t be tolerated or condoned. When animal rights trump human rights something is seriously wrong. Mr. Cohen instead of pushing for Congo’s Law should have been pressing for passage of Lillian’s Law, first enacted in Texas to protect humans from vicious, deadly dog attacks. Lillian’s Law sends dog owners of unprovoked attacks to jail.
Furthermore, the vicious and dangerous dog statutes need to be tightened up rather than watered down. Dog mauling could be virtually eliminated by simply passing a statute mandating jaw straps for all dogs over 15 pounds while in the public domain. This is cheap, highly effective and enforceable. Why should we have to wait for a child to be mauled to death before protecting the public from such senseless, needless attacks? People should be free to walk the streets without fear of being mauled and maimed.
Assemblyman Cohen, do your job and start protecting our children.
