Hospital’s ‘Power of Pink’ event set for July

LONG BRANCH – The Women’s Council for the Leon Hess Cancer Center at Monmouth Medical Center will be hosting its 2008 “Power of Pink” Luncheon on July 24.

The annual fundraising luncheon will be hosted at the Fort Chapel and Grounds at Sandy Hook from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will honor Dr. David J. Sharon.

The guest speaker for the 2008 event is Mary Jo Codey, former first lady of New Jersey. As a staunch advocate for individuals affected by breast cancer, Codey welcomed the invitation to speak at this year’s luncheon, according to a press release from Monmouth Medical Center.

Codey is a breast cancer survivor and lost her mother to the disease. As first lady, she launched a statewide fundraising campaign in support of breast cancer awareness and was active in stressing the importance of early detection.

The Women’s Council is excited to honor Sharon at the Power of Pink Luncheon, according to the release.

Sharon has been the attending physician at Monmouth Medical Center for more than 25 years and is currently the medical director of the Leon Hess Cancer Center. He has championed the hospital’s cancer program since 1985, in the capacity of section chief of Hematology Oncology.

The sit-down luncheon is planned for over 350 attendees and will include the opportunity to win a custom designed pink diamond necklace donated by Maureen Bay of Gem of An Idea in Fair Haven. Additionally, a silent auction of donated items from local retailers and a boutique of various items will be for sale.
