In a fast-paced world where many people are chained to their computers at work, the opportunities for actual interaction with neighbors can be few and far between.
In an effort to bring the community together, the Dayton Village Citizens’ Coalition and the South Brunswick Garden Club are hosting the annual Dayton Village Community Picnic on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. located at historic Wetherill at 269 Georges Road.
”It’s a potluck picnic where everyone brings a dish,” said Joan Luckhardt, one of the event’s organizers. “We have a multiethnic community so there will be multiethnic food because everyone shares.”
Ms. Luckhardt said dishes like fresh blueberry pie, chocolate cake, potato salad, fresh farm produce and many others will be on hand. The picnic will also feature games for children like water balloons and potato-sack races, a visit by McGruff the Crime Prevention Dog, volleyball games and musical entertainment provided by the band Kromatic Royalty.
”It’s going to be a fun relaxing afternoon filled with great conversation and great food,” Ms. Luckhardt said. “We all practically live in our cars and on our computers and it’s hard to meet your neighbors and the people in the community, so this is a great way to meet your neighbors.”
Ms. Luckhardt said the picnic is a means for the community to return to its past as a farming community.
”I was raised in a farming community in Ohio and during the summer it was typical for everyone to get together and bring a dish, have the kids play and have a good time,” Ms. Luckhardt said.
