NEW BRUNSWICK – An expanded shuttle service will add more stops and extended operating hours to residents traveling to, from and around the city of New Brunswick.
The Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders and local officials held a press conference July 8 to introduce the expansion.
Steven Fittante, director of Middlesex County Transportation, began the presentation, which was held near a bus stop at the corner of George and Somerset streets in New Brunswick, by saying, “The project is basically taking the former Hub City Trolley which, for 13 years, has been a lifeline for a number of people here in New Brunswick, and is replacing it with the Middlesex County Area Transit (MCAT).”
The former Hub City Trolley was operated by Suburban Transit and was paid for by Middlesex County, the city of New Brunswick and the township of North Brunswick. The Suburban Transit contract ended June 30.
The new expansion adds more Jersey Avenue shuttle service and the new BrunsQuik Loop shuttle service.
The Jersey Avenue shuttle will run from downtown New Brunswick along Jersey Avenue into North Brunswick from 5:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
The BrunsQuik Loop shuttle will run from Somerset and George streets on a loop of George Street and Livingston, Remsen and Commercial avenues. The service will be offered 5:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays.
David B. Crabiel, Middlesex County Freeholders director, said, “This is a great day for the city of New Brunswick and for Middlesex County because this is affordable transportation for the residents.”
The goal of the expansion is to increase ridership and help the environment.
