Rutgers redshirt sophomore Catherine Whetstone was one of 21 student-athletes recognized by the Big East Conference as winners of the 2007-08 Scholar Athlete Sport Excellence Award, which recognizes academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence awards are given to one student-athlete in each Big East sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the Big East faculty athletic representatives.
Whetstone red-shirted the 2007-08 season after a promising freshman campaign in which she qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100 butterfly. She placed 14th and set a school record with a time of 53.27, making her an NCAA Honorable Mention All-American. Additionally, her time qualified her for the 2008 Olympic Trials.
