FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – A discarded printer cartridge thrown into a landfill can take up to 450 years to decompose. With more than 350 million cartridges thrown out every year, a mountain of e-waste is steadily forming throughout the nation’s landfills.
Cartridge World- Freehold is part of a mission throughout the United States to educate local consumers and businesses on how they can help make a difference in the planet’s limited natural resources.
Cartridge World- Freehold owner Jim Dempsey said he has started a summer program to collect empty print cartridges and reward people with $1-off coupons since there is no township program for recycling print cartridges.
He said many people used those credits toward purchasing fresh cartridges, but he felt there was a void for people who wanted to do the right thing for the environment and recycle the cartridges but did not necessarily want them replaced.
Dempsey engaged the other store owners in the Raintree Towne Center, Route 537, and got agreements from the following stores that are willing to accept his Cartridge World Bucks:
• Norkus Foodtown, $1 off any sandwich from the Boar’s Head Sandwich Shoppe. Minimum purchase of $3.99. Must use club card. One offer per customer.
• Dr. David T. Horowitz, chiropractor, complimentary exam with office treatment ($150 value).
• Frankly Burgers & More, $1 off a $5 minimum order.
• Nail Lounge, $1 off per visit.
• Raintree Dry Cleaners, $1 off dry cleaning order per visit.
• Jim Pastorini Insurance Agency, free insurance review and a gift.
• Cohen Dental, complimentary Invisalign consultation.
• La Dolce Bakery, $1 off a $5 minimum order.
• Romeo’s Ristorante, $1 off a $5 minimum order.

• Cartridge World, unlimited credit toward any cartridge refilled or rebuilt locally on the premises.

Dempsey, who is a resident of Freehold Township, said he believes his program will help residents through the economic downturn, as well as save on gas if everyone only needs to go to one shopping center for a number of savings.
