William Schoelwer, Princeton Farms
The Hopewell Township Committee tentatively plans to introduce two ordinances on Sept. 8 that would permit owners of small residential lots to have small (chickens) farm animals on their properties. The ordinances would permit six chickens or other small animals per half acre. The ordinance also would permit a building and fenced area within 25 feet of the property line. The proposed ordinance would even permit these buildings in front yards.
While I understand the desire of some people to raise chickens or similar animals as pets or to provide food, I do not think a subdivision is the appropriate place for such animals.
Taken to the ultimate, a subdivision, such as Princeton Farms, could have about 700 chickens and Elm Ridge Park even more. Chickens are dirty, smell and can raise health issues. The Township Health Department does not have the resources to inspect these proposed facilities. They do not belong in residential areas. Please contact a member of the Township Committee to express your opposition to these ordinances.
