Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County’s Earth Center will sponsor a Garden Field Day on Sept. 7 from 1 to 5 p.m., rain or shine. The event will take place at the Earth Center, located at 42 Riva Ave. in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, South Brunswick.
The Extension/Agricultural Department staff, as well as the County Master Gardeners, will be on hand, offering sound advice on horticulture and environmental stewardship. Tours will be given of the various demonstration gardens in the park. Gardens to tour include a large vegetable display garden, a 13-bed herb garden, rain garden and a shade and ornamental tree display area. Various 4- H clubs will display their interests and accomplishments. Jazz/funk instrumental band the Hub-Kings will perform, and kids can meet MC Blue, the county’s recycling robot.
One of the guests at Garden Field Day will be “Farm to Table,” a sustainability program presented by Elijah’s Promise and Promise Job’s Culinary School. The school’s chefs will harvest produce from the gardens and serve some exotic dishes. On the menu will be dishes from the Native American Tradition: Three Sisters Stew, Tuscan Lima Bean Spread, as well as Greens of the Season. Those who cannot visit the Earth Center this season can get vegetable gardening tips from Extension staff by visiting the Web site at www.co.middlesex.nj.us/extensionservices and clicking on Educational Video.
