PLUMSTED — School is back in session for children in Plumsted. Approximately 1,850 students returned to class in the Plumsted Township School District on Sept. 3.
“This is a very exciting time,” new Superintendent of Schools Mark C. DeMareo said. “I am very eager to start working with the students, parents and faculty and expanding and enhancing the excellent educational opportunities offered in the Plumsted Township School District.”
For pupils in grades two through five there is a new principal, Robert Burkhardt, at the Dr. Gerald H. Woehr Elementary School. Burkhardt joined the district on July 1.
“I am delighted to be a part of the district as principal of Dr. Gerald H. Woehr Elementary School,” Burkhardt said. “I look forward to working with the students, parents and staff during the coming year.”
Burkhardt has been an educator for 32 years. He began his career as a high school band director and music teacher in Newark. After two years in Newark, he served as a high school band director and music teacher in Irvington for 15 years.
Burkhardt served as an elementary school principal at the Madison Avenue School in Irvington from 1998 to 2004. From 2004 to 2007 he served as principal of the Deerfield School for grades three through eight in Mountainside.
Most recently, Burkhardt served as the supervisor of special programs in the Plainfield public schools during the 2007- 08 school year.
Burkhardt received a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Montclair State University. He attended graduate school at Rutgers University, where he received a master’s degree in educational administration.
Burkhardt has served as the director of music and as choir director at the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Jackson, where he lives with his wife, Dr. Patrice Burkhardt.
For prekindergarten pupils at the New Egypt Primary School, the morning class runs from 8:35 to 11:05 a.m. The afternoon session runs 12:45-3:15 p.m.
Kindergarten and first-grade students at the New Egypt Primary School are in class from 8:35 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
Classes for children in grade two though five at the Dr, Gerald H. Woehr Elementary School run from 8:45 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.
Students at the New Egypt Middle School (grades six through eight) attend class from 7:55 a.m. to 2:35 p.m.
Classes at New Egypt High School (9- 12) begin at 7:23 a.m. and end at 1:55 p.m.
Back to School Night at the New Egypt Primary School (pre-K, kindergarten and first grade) will be held Sept. 17.
Back to School Night at the Dr. Gerald H. Woehr Elementary School (grades 2-5) will be held Sept. 15.
Back to School Night at the New Egypt Middle School (6-8) will be held Sept. 4.
Back to School Night at New Egypt High School (9-12) will be held Sept. 25.
