Pennington Borough’s new patrolman, who joined the police force on Aug. 19, is scheduled to take the formal oath of office at Monday’s Borough Council meeting.
The new officer is Mark W. Offerman, 22, a Hamilton resident. He left a patrol officer’s post in Riverton to come to Pennington.
Mr. Offerman replaced Kevin Tatur, who resigned from the Pennington Police Department about two months ago to take a job with the Huntersville, N.C. police.
Officer Tatur, who worked with the Pennington force for more than 10 years, is scheduled to be honored with an official proclamation during Monday’s meeting.
The borough received 61 applications for Officer Tatur’s job.
Mr. Offerman is a 2006 graduate of the Ocean County Police Academy. He was with the Riverton police since May 2007. Prior to that, he worked as a special officer for the Point Pleasant police.
His starting annual salary with the Pennington police is $39,641. The six-man Pennington police force is supervised by police Director William Meytrott.
Mr. Meytrott said recently that Mr. Offerman’s experience as a police officer was a factor in the decision to hire him.
”He’ll be able to begin shift work more quickly than an officer fresh out of the police academy,” Mr. Meytrott said.
