Steeb new boys’ coach

Rickey Steeb feels like he is coming into his position as Montgomery High boys’ soccer coach pretty well prepared.
A graduate of McCorristin High School and Rowan University, Steeb spent the last two seasons as the Cougars’ freshman coach. So he knows the players in the program and that’s a nice advantage to have going into his first head coaching job.
”I had the pleasure of working with Bob Schwartz,” Steeb said of the Cougars’ former head coach, who left the district for another teaching position. “He’s a great guy and I learned a lot from him. It was a great experience to coach under him and work with him these last two years.
”I’m very excited to be the new head coach at Montgomery. I’m hoping to be able to continue the tradition of soccer success that they have had here.”
Steeb graduated from McCorristin (now Trenton Catholic) in 2000 as the all-time leading goal scorer in the Colonial Valley Conference. He then went on to Rowan University, where his soccer career was cut short by an injury.
”I love soccer,” said Steeb, who is a health and physical education in the district. “I have a real passion for the sport and I am getting to do what I love. I’m coaching soccer and teaching health and physical education.”
Having coached many of the varsity players at the freshman level the last two years, Steeb feels like that will be an advantage going into the season.
”I feel like I have a good rapport with my players,” he said. “I’ve been in the program the past two years and I knew a lot of the players already. The last two years have been good for me and I think it helps to come into the position already knowing a lot of the kids in the program.”
A year ago, the Cougars reached the Central Jersey Group IV tournament and posted an opening-round upset win over Steinert. This year, he just wants to see his team play as well as it can every time it takes the field.
”I want us to play an attractive style of soccer,” said Steeb, whose team will open the season Sept. 12 at home against Watchung Hills. “We’re going to play fast and physical, but also with finesse. Our league is very competitive again this year. We open up with a tough game against Watchung.”
Steeb hopes his team is prepared. He feels like he is.
