We all want the new school year to be a positive experience for our children, and one way to make surethat school is a positive experience is to talk to our young people about staying away from alcohol and drugs. Illegal drugs are certainly a problem in our community, but more teens drink than smoke or use drugs, and research shows alcohol harms growing body and mind.
Many of our young people are moving from elementary to middle school and many are also moving from middle school to high school. Transitioning to a different school is an exciting time, offering young people the opportunity to explore new interests and make new friends. The middle school and high school years also present challenges. Teens spend less time with their parents, they often spend more time alone or with friends.
These changes are important steps on the road to becoming an adult. However, the same changes can also increase the chance that some young people may turn to alcohol. Take the time to talk to your children about exploring positive interests and hobbies and making the choice not to use alcohol.
Everyone in our area can work together to create a community where young people can grow up and feel good about themselves without drinking.
