Palin insults community organizers

Tyler Maulsby of Lawrence’s ‘The Community’
Alaska Gov. Sara Palin’s statement last Wednesday night that community organizers have no real responsibility was completely inappropriate. Not only was it factually incorrect but it also ridiculed the very people who elected her to higher office in the first place.
Our country was founded by community organizers who rallied people together for the purpose creating a more free society. It is the crucial trait of any thriving democracy to have an active public that participates in the political process and the issues that matter to them. I would like to ask Mrs. Palin exactly how that would be possible (or for that matter how a mayor would know what issues are important to her constituents) if it weren’t for community organizers?
As a new non-profit in Lawrence, The Community’s goal is to bring people together to organize service-oriented projects in order to make Lawrence a better place to live, work, and raise a family. As is implicit from our title, we find no better way to accomplish this goal than to bring people together in order to find out exactly what is important to them.
While we are a non-partisan organization, we find Mrs. Palin’s remarks inappropriate and offensive.
