Thomas J. Kavanaugh, VFW Post 2290, and its Ladies Auxiliary will hold the annual POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony Sept. 19 at the post home, 600 Washington Ave., Manville.
The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. and there will be several speakers representing the local and state governments, as well as veterans’ organizations, speaking on the importance of this day.
It is important to remember that there are approximately 88,000 U.S. service members missing from the nation’s wars. This includes about 78,000 missing from World War II, more than 8,100 from the Korean War, 1801 from the Vietnam War and about 125 from the Cold War.
Observances of National POW/MIA Recognition Day are held across the country on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, schools and veterans’ facilities. This observance is one of six days throughout the year that Congress has mandated the flying of the National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag. The others are Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.
Veterans’ organizations such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion remain committed to the families of the missing to work with our Armed Services to continue to search for those who were not found and not rest until we can bring them home.
We urge the public to come and join the veterans gathered to remember our Prisoners of War and Missing in Action.
More information can be obtained by calling the post at 908-725-2290.
Thank you for your support of the VFW.
