Multicultural health festival scheduled for Sept. 20

Burlington County’s fourth annual Minority and Multicultural Health Festival, “Faith in Wellness,” will be Saturday, Sept. 20 from 1 – 4 p.m. at the Kennedy Center on JFK Way in Willingboro.
    September is Minority and Multicultural Health Month and the purpose of the festival is to raise awareness about discrepancies in the health status of minorities. African-American males have the highest rates for all cancers according to the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services. Studies also have shown that African-American women have higher rates of heart disease. In addition, there will also be a three-on-three basketball tournament. The tournament will feature healthy lifestyle messages throughout the games. The Health Fest will include free health screenings and information on:
    * diet/nutrition, rest, exercise
    * drug and alcohol use/abuse
    * safe sexual practices and attitudes
    * crime prevention
    * disease detection/early intervention including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, AIDS and stroke.
    Faith in Wellness is a free event open to all county residents, and is sponsored by the Burlington County Freeholders through the Health Department, Willingboro Township and the Burlington County Cancer Coalition.
    The fest, held in the cafeteria, also includes healthy snacks and prizes. For additional information, contact the County Health Department, Asha Campbell, at 609-265-5548.
