HIGHTSTOWN Camilla M. Schwieger, 94, died Saturday at Meadow Lakes.
Born in Manhattan, N.Y., she lived in New York City until moving to the Meadow Lakes retirement community in 1998. She spent her summers in New Paltz, N.Y.
As a young woman, she worked on Governor’s Island for Bell Labs. After raising her three children in the Bronx, N.Y., she pursued her education, graduating from Hunter College, where she has endowed a scholarship, and received her master’s degree in American studies from New York University.
She was involved with the Girl Scouts of America, on a local and regional level, and also served as a lecturer for the League of Women Voters in New York City. A lover and supporter of the arts, she was an avid watercolorist and bloomed as a poet after her move to Meadow Lakes.
She is predeceased by her husband of 50 years, John Henry Schwieger, who served as vice president of the New York Stock Exchange and director of the New York YMCA.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Dr. Camilla and Dr. Richard Humphreys of Northampton, Mass.; sons and daughters-in-law Jonathan and Lilly Schwieger of Garden City, N.Y., and Gerret and Kathleen Schwieger of Princeton Junction; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in New Paltz, N.Y. later this fall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Hightstown Presbyterian Church – Meadow Lakes Ministry.
Arrangements are under the direction of the A.S. Cole Funeral Home, Cranbury.
