Carolyn S. Royce

   Carolyn S. (Ward) Royce, 76, died Friday, Sept. 12, at home following a lengthy battle with lung cancer.
   Born June 5, 1932 and raised in Rochester, N.Y., she lived most of her life in Branchburg. She moved to Forked River in 1983, and spent the final years of her life in Whiting. After earning a bachelor’s degree in French literature from Hiram College in Ohio in 1954, and a master’s degree in library science from Rutgers in 1969, she began working as a county librarian at the Somerset County Library. She later worked as an elementary school librarian at Orchard Road School in Montgomery Township and as a technical school librarian at Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School. She finally worked in library management with the Ocean County Library System, retiring in 1996. She was known by her friends and family for her creativity, skillful sewing, wonderful writing, stylishly elegant dress and love of decorating. She also enjoyed the Jersey Shore and boating and served for years with the Coast Guard Auxilliary.
   Her parents, Dr. H.F., MD and Edalin Ward, a brother, Rodger Ward, two sisters, Grace Abbott and Marion Anundson, and her husband, Mahlon Royce and Harold MacDonald, are deceased.
   In addition to many friends and extended family, she is survived by her former husband and dear friend, Frank Totten of Monmouth Junction; her children, Steven and his wife, Susan, and Gary and his wife, Donna, all of San Diego; Sharri Sullivan and her husband, Larry, of Hillsborough, Lorali Totten of East Windsor, Dana Totten and his wife, Venice, of Evans, Ga., and Diane Royce Smith and her husband, Riley, of Grover Beach, Calif.; her grandchildren, Laura, Jason and David Royce, Claire DeAngelis and her husband, Glenn, Michael Sullivan, Ryan Sharkey, Elijah, Tony and Grace Totten, and Patrick Sullivan and his wife, Kate; three great-grandchildren, Holly, Devon and Joseph DeAngelis; and several nieces and nephews.
   Private cremation was at the convenience of the family. Friends and family will be received Saturday, Sept. 20, at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, 205 Rhode Hall Road, Monroe, from noon to 2 p.m., at which time there will be a Memorial service. There also will be a gathering and memorial Saturday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. at the Pines at Whiting, 509 Route 530, Whiting, followed by a time of fellowship. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society of Channel 13, WNET, New York.
