VENICE, Fla. Genevieve Abigail (Abby) Varley died Sept. 11 at the Harbor Chase Assisted Living Community in Venice.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1910, Ms. Varley will be remembered in Bordentown as the co-owner and operator of the Abbie-Marcia Beauty Shop on Farnsworth Avenue for many years until retiring to Venice in 1986.
She was a well-known artist in Bordentown, exhibiting many paintings and crafting a prominent mural near the town center. She was president of the Bordentown Historical Society for several years during the time from 1970 to 1986, having a special interest in Thomas Paine, who was a famous resident of Bordentown during the Revolutionary War.
Ms. Varley was a member of the Bordentown Community Players in the past and acted in many of the plays staged by the group in the late 1930s and 1940s, displaying a great talent for the theatrical field in her spare time.
The daughter of the late George and Martha Errickson, she was predeceased by her first husband, Clement A. McDade; her second husband, Walter Varley; her three sisters, Martha L. Smith, Louise Southard and Helene Rein; and her brother, George Errickson. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, James C. and Margaret McDade of Janesville, Wis., and Edward J. and Grace McDade of Yardley, Pa; her daughter, Madeline L. Weiss of Venice; her brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Cissie Errickson of Bordentown; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and caring friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Bordentown, with Father Leo Dusheck officiating. Interment followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bordentown.
Arrangements were under the direction of Bordentown Home for Funerals, 40 Crosswicks St., Bordentown.
