MONROE — A 28-year-old 1999 Monroe Township High School graduate was killed when he was struck by a Northeast Corridor train just west of the Princeton Junction train station in the early morning hours on Sunday, in what township police are calling a suicide.
Kevin Greim, of South River, was killed at around 1:15 a.m. Sunday, shortly after the train engineer saw a naked white man jump in front of the train with his arms outstretched above his head, according to West Windsor police Lt. Carl Walsh.
The engineer blew the Trenton-bound train’s horn and attempted to execute an emergency stop, according to NJ Transit spokesman Joe Dee, but it was too late to save Mr. Greim.
The South River resident’s remains were located a quarter-mile north of where the engineer had first blown the horn and initiated the emergency stop, police said, somewhere on the section of tracks between Alexander Road and Meadow Road in the township.
Investigators later discovered a pile of clothing stacked near the Vaughn Drive track access point, including a wallet with identification that indicated the deceased was Mr. Greim, Lt. Walsh said.
NJ Transit officials would not comment on the nature of Mr. Greim’s death, but West Windsor police said that Mr. Greim’s actions indicated the South River man took his own life.
”As far as we’re concerned, this was a suicide,” said Lt. Walsh, who confirmed that because of the location of the train station the township saw suicides from time to time.
So far 16 people have lost their lives after being struck by NJ Transit trains in 2008, according to Mr. Dee, who said the rail agency saw 14 deaths in the same period of time in 2007.
”Those numbers tend to be fairly consistent, from year to year,” Mr. Dee said.
