The vice presidency of the United States is no longer the “bucket of warm spit” cited by Jack Garner, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s first vice president. In recent years it has become crucial — Gore for good, Cheney for evil, but crucial nevertheless.
Sen. McCain, for all his past heroism, has insulted the nation and put it in political peril by choosing Gov. Palin to be the proverbial “one heartbeat away” and has done her possibly budding career a disservice by putting her in a position of potential embarrassment.
Sen. Obama, conversely, chose Sen. Biden who adds substance, who could assume the presidency seamlessly if necessary and who augments his own qualifications for that office.
How can any voter in her or his right mind conceive of superimposing a minimum of four years of McCain/Palin on top of the eight year debacle of Bush/Cheney?
An enlightened electorate must not let that happen.
