Even with stars Lindsey Bell and Ashley Bronston out of the lineup, the Bordentown Regional High varsity field hockey team still had no trouble beating Palmyra, 2-0, this past Monday at Bordentown.
“I’m happy with the win because last Friday we did not play well (in a 1-0 win over Medford Tech). So to come back and play well on a Monday (which has never been the Scotties’ favorite day to play) was encouraging,” noted Bordentown head varsity field hockey coach Kim Fithen, whose team showed its depth by playing an excellent game without the services of two of its better players.
Of course, when your team has a clutch player like Tracy Romberger, who is the Johan Santanna of the Scotties, it makes it a whole lot easier. Romberger scored a first-
half goal on a Megan Tohill feed from the backfield and then she assisted on Kathleen Timm’s second-
half tally. Romberger’s goal was a thing of beauty.
“She took it (the ball) from about 30 yards out, beat their last defender one-on-one and took the shot from the top of the circle. Tracy (Romberger) struck it well from the top of the circle,” noted Fithen.
Bordentown goalies Stephanie Talley and Ashley Adams combined for the shutout. Talley stopped the only shot she saw in the first half while Adams made a pair of second-half saves. Bordentown had a dozen shots on goal.
In last Friday’s 1-0 road win over Medford, Bordentown played solid defense and got off a lot of shots, basically, it just had trouble finishing until Romberger finally knocked in the game-winner with 10:46 left in regulation.
“It wasn’t like we didn’t have pressure on them consistently — we just couldn’t get it in the net. The Medford players have speed so any given time they can give you (a well-played game),” said Fithen, whose team often had to battle a Medford defense, which most of the time, was bunched in the front of the cage.
Talley played well in goal for Bordentown and earned the shutout.
On September 17, a powerful Delran team hosted and defeated Bordentown, 5-0.
Despite the final score, the Scotties took a lot of positives out of the game against the Bears.
“We played well against Delran. They scored in the first five minutes of the game and right from that point I put Soozin Kang on their best midfielder. And Soozin shadowed her the rest of the game. After their first goal we played even with them for the next 25 minutes and then they scored a back-breaking goal right before the half,” Fithen said.
Adams made 15 saves to keep the score down.
“Adams did well,” said Fithen. “Defensively, we’ve been holding pretty well. Lindsey Bell has been phenomenal at sweeper. This past week she stopped at least five one-
on-ones.”
So far this season the Scotties are 4-2 and their losses came against two pretty good field hockey teams in Delran and Cinnaminson.
“The games we’ve needed to win we’ve been able to win,” added Fithen. “We’re trying to play one game at a time.”
Bordentown is scheduled to host Holy Cross on Friday and Nottingham on Saturday. Bordentown is scheduled at Maple Shade next Monday and at Cinnaminson next Wednesday.
