Princeton U plans and Alexander Road

Joel S. Greenberg of Princeton
Princeton University is in the planning stage for a massive expansion that will lead to a reshaping of the downtown Princeton area; in particular major changes are planned to the infrastructure in the area around Alexander Road. It is likely that the planned changes will, or could, result in significant traffic problems. In the overall planning process consideration should be given to ways of alleviating the potential traffic problems.
One of the possible ways that traffic could be reduced on Alexander Road is to provide an alternative to using Alexander Road. Such an alternative would be to also utilize Springdale Road, which goes from Mercer and intersects Alexander Road near the canal. Part of this road is currently paved and part is unpaved and barricaded. It is understood that Princeton University and the Institute for Advanced Study own all or most of the land associated with this alternative.
Because of the enormity of the potential impacts of the planned PU expansion, it is necessary that to minimize these impacts, the planning process consider solutions that may not be in the immediate vicinity of Alexander Road.
