SBHS Athletics Week in Review

FOOTBALL
   Mike Muha was 5-for-5 for 128 yards and two touchdowns, and also ran for a TD in the Vikings 28-7 win over Union City last Monday. Jimmy Mikedes returned a fumble 42 yards for another score. Dan Acevedo and Tom Dunleavy caught TD passes of 50 and 44 yards, respectively. Cody Shelcusky had eight carries for 56 yards and Johnny Mayfield added three carries for 42 yards.
BOYS SOCCER
   Sean Tyree had a goal and an assist while Kazuki Yamada and Walid Ahmed also tallied in the Vikings 3-0 win over Old Bridge Friday. Kevin Gramata notched the shutout with four saves while Tommy Huchko and Brian Hayden each had assists.
   Huchko had a goal and an assist, Tyler Smith and Yamada each had goals and Tyree had an assist as the Vikings topped Edison, 3-0, to move to 5-0-1. Gramata had 10 saves for the shutout.
GIRL SOCCER
   Kailee Peskin and Lauryn Strebeck scored goals and goalie Lauren Viverito made them stand up with 10 saves in South Brunswick’s 2-0 win over Old Bridge Friday.
   The Vikings moved to 4-1 with a 3-1 win over Edison Tuesday, as Carissa Walters had a goal and an assist and Kristen Cooney and Strebeck had goals.
VOLLEYBALL
   Jess Pietrefesa had an ace, a kill and 14 digs and Jen Strincoski had five aces and four kills in the Vikes 25-16 27-25 loss to Old Bridge last Wednesday.
   Strincoski had seven kills and an ace, Katie Rolwood had nine assists and six digs and Pietrefesa added four kills and 12 digs in a 25-22, 24-26 25-13 loss to Monroe Saturday.
   In a 25-8, 29-27 setback to East Brunswick Tuesday, Pietrefesa had eight digs, Rachel Vogel had five assists and two digs and Strincoski had two kills and assist and four digs.
FIELD HOCKEY
   Rebecca Dahl had four saves in South Brunswick’s 2-0 loss to East Brunswick last Friday.
   The Vikes took a 1-0 win over Metuchen last Wednesday as Angie Goff scored off assists from Carly Bossert and Jen Luck. Dahl made three saves for the shutout.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
   Matt Boley (16:59) finished second while John Bellizio (17:27), Tyler Blackburn (17:35), Brian Dixon (17:39), Sean Monaghan (17:51) and Connor Scharff (18:00) took 6-9 as the Vikings nipped St. Joe’s 28-29 Tuesday at St. Joe’s 3.1-mile course. The Vikes moved to 1-1.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
   Sophia Ginez (20:19), Cayla Delpiano (20:19) Lyndsey Sample (20:20), Jennifer Smilgis (20:42) and Ashley Edwards (21:03) took the top five spots in the Vikes 15-46 win over Woodbridge at Merrill Park’s 3.1-mile course Tuesday. Amanda Smilgis (21:27) took sixth and Kayla Noll (22:18) was 10th. The Vikings moved to 2-0.
TENNIS
   Ali Noll won 6-0, 6-0 over Laura Quan at first singles last Wednesday in the Vikings 4-1 loss to J.P. Stevens. In a 4-1 setback to East Brunswick Friday, Christine Wotton-Julie Sendner won at second doubles.
   In a 4-1 win over Old Bridge Monday, which clinched a state berth, Noll and Erin Kurkela won at first and third singles, and Leah Suttner-Karen Sendner and Maya Jeffries-Gabby Gagliano won at first and second doubles.
GYMNASTICS
   The Vikings moved their dual meet record to 3-0 with a 96.625 to 83.875 win over Piscataway last Thursday.
   Caitlyn Borghi took second in all-around with a score of 30.2, as she was second on floor (8.25),. third on beam (7.95) and fourth on bars (6.7). Shannon Martin won vault (9.375) and bars (8.725), Tori Kubick won floor (8.475) and Jess Macay was second on beam (8.475). Dana Vasers took thirds on vault (8.15) and bars (7.225) and fourth on beam (7.3). Maddy Anand was 4-5 on vault-bars, Sam Bramm and Amanda Klein tied for third on floor, Amanda Zimmerman was fifth on beam and Adrienne Greco was 4-5 on floor-vault.
   SBHS took fourth at the Pioneer Classic in Somerville with a 107.5, which was .4 out of third place. Lindsay Carbone (35.95) and Martin were 2-4 in all-around. Carbone was second on beam (9.5) and floor (9.425), Martin was sixth on floor (9.225) and seventh on beam (8.925), while Macay (9.575) won floor to help the Vikes win the team title in that event. Macay was also second on vault (9.425) and fourth on beam (9.3).
