The report in The Packet’s Sept. 26 edition that a meeting of public officials and interested citizens on public premises to discuss as transcendent a community topic of interest as the future of Route 206 was adjourned because of a reporter’s presence should not come as a surprise. Here again we have a demonstration of the arrogance that afflicts local governments in the Princetons. Our local officials are allergic to transparency.
Meetings held to discuss matters that impact local residents and taxpayers should be open to the public and news media as a matter of democratic principle.
Likewise, citizens on advisory groups who wish to influence outcomes affecting the rest of us must be willing to be identified. What is it they want to suppress? When asked about the hasty adjournment, a DOT official remarked: “Every town has its own style.”
You can say that again.
