 Obituary of Fernand Baruch

 
Fernand Baruch, 87, a long-time resident of Princeton and University alumnus passed away September 30, 2008 at Glenridge, Sarasota, Florida. He was surrounded by his loving wife of 62 years, Margery Wyckoff Baruch, and his children, whose sustaining love and support were his greatest joy.
 
He was born June 15, 1921 in Yeadon, Pennsylvania. For the past three decades, Ferdie was a resident of Casey Key and Sarasota, Florida, and summered on Bottle Lake in Maine.
 
In addition to his wife Margery, he is survived by his children Margery Baruch McCarty of Boulder, CO and her son Brady; Linda Baruch Sullivan and Mitchell Leon of Casey Key, FL and their children Lindsay and her husband Kipp, Anya, and Noah; Fernand Baruch, Jr. and his wife Janet of Richmond, VA and their children Andy, Alex, Wyck, Amy and Samantha; Pieter W. Baruch and his wife Lani of Jacksonville, FL and their children Chelsea, Leighton, and Pieter; Edward W. Baruch and his wife Nancy of Golden, CO and their children Justine, Seaver, Tyler, and Luke; Lucy D. Baruch and Kamala Brush of Piscataway, NJ.  His niece Barbara Tafaro and her husband Henry Tafaro of Casey Key, FL were like children to him. He is also survived by his nieces Elaine Baruch Kent, who was like a sister to him, Susanna Dent and nephews Richard Baruch, Earle Baruch, Robert Baruch, and Fred Durham. He was predeceased by his grandson Ted Sullivan.
He graduated from Haverford School in 1940 and was a member of the Princeton University Class of 1944. At Princeton he developed life-long friendships and was a member of The Ivy Club. While an undergraduate, he served in WWII in the 10th Mountain Division of the Army and was awarded a Bronze Star. As one of the early entrants to the 10th Mountain Division, he was among the first to be deployed and participated in campaigns in the Aleutians and in one of the war’s historic battles on Mt. Belvedere in the Italian Alps.  After a career at Guy Carpenter, a subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan, he retired from the re-insurance business in 1981.
 
An avid naturalist, in his youth he spent his summers at Camp Allagash in Maine and later, as a counselor, guided regularly on the Allagash River. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed golfing, fishing, canoeing, skiing and camping.
 
A commemoration of his life will be celebrated at The Bath Club, 712 South Casey Key Road, Nokomis at 4pm on Friday, October 3, 2008. He will be buried in Princeton, New Jersey.
