Market move needs input on traffic control
By Mae Rhine, Managing Editor
We love the idea of Sergeantsville moving its farmers market to West Amwell’s municipal building property.
The market is well established and not that far away. We think people will drive the extra distance to get great produce from local growers.
We are concerned, however, about traffic.
The market would be located on the lawn in front of the township building on Rocktown-Lambertville Road. There will be plenty of space for vendors and parking for consumers.
But with 350 to 400 cars already there every Saturday to drop off trash, additional traffic could be an issue. It is, after all, a rural site served by meandering, narrow back roads.
Safety should be of the utmost importance. Let’s not forget that a woman was killed at the site in May 2001 when dropping off trash.
Officials should look at traffic patterns in and out of the site as well as leading to it.
We don’t want to put a damper on what we think will be an excellent addition to the township, but before the township issues the required formal invitation to have the market come to West Amwell, officials, including police, and residents — in a public forum — should consider how increased traffic will affect this rural area.
